If you want to teach business, DSU can help. The business education program is run by an interdisciplinary team of education and business faculty. At DSU, you’ll learn all the essentials of business required for teacher certification and a K–12 educational technology endorsement. This means you can teach business courses at the high-school level, but you can also teach computer skills for any grade K–12.

With DSU’s technical focus, you’ll be prepared to teach with the latest classroom technology. You’ll use one-to-one wireless mobile computers on campus, so you can teach in one-to-one classrooms. Plus, you’ll be fully prepared to teach essential business technology as it emerges.

Benefits of studying business education at DSU

Business Education classes are typically close-knit. The student–faculty ratio is just 24:1 on average. Faculty have real-life experience teaching, working in business, and helping with state education projects. As a student in their classrooms, you’ll receive real-world advice that will be immediately applicable. We’ve also developed strong relationships with business educators in the area to help you find internships and student teaching opportunities.

You'll also have a year-long residency (a two-semester student teaching opportunity) in the public schools as your capstone experience. As a student teacher, you will teach at one level (middle or high school) to give you a jump start on your teaching career. You’ll be ready to lead the class when it’s time.

Outside the classroom, there are a number of student clubs and activities to join, including Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Business Club, Student Senate, and the Kappa Sigma Iota (KSI) Honorary Society. Scholarships and grants are also available for business education majors.

Integrated technology

Students have the benefit of using one-to-one wireless mobile computers on campus giving them the experience needed to teach in South Dakota schools that are moving to one-to-one classrooms. They  also have the benefit of using the latest technology in the classroom including tablets, mobile devices, smart boards and other software.

Accreditation

Our bachelor of science in education program is one of a handful of schools in South Dakota accredited by the National Association for Business Teacher Education (NABTE). We meet all curriculum standards established by our state department of education for business education certification.
