Ready to become a college student?

As a veteran, you have many educational benefits available to you. DSU is accredited by the SAA (State Approving agency) as a Program Eligible for Veterans Benefits, and we’re excited to have you apply to one of our excellent programs.

When you’re ready to apply, simply review our admissions requirements for our undergraduate or graduate programs. There’s also some paperwork that you’ll need to fill out in order to receive your benefits. This paperwork will depend on which program or chapter you’re under:

Chapter 30

This applies to: Active Duty Military. You’ll need:

  • Most recent DD-214
  • VA Form 22-1990 Application for Education Benefits or Form 22-1995 for transfer students

Chapter 31

This applies to: VA Vocational Rehabilitation. You’ll need:

  • Meet with counselor from the regional VA Vocational Rehabilitation office (Sioux Falls or Rapid City)
  • VA Form 22-1905 sent to school from counselor

Chapter 33

This applies to: Post 9/11 Veterans. You’ll need:

  • Most recent DD-214
  • VA Form 22-1990 Application for Education Benefits or Form 22-1995 for transfer students
  • Any kicker paperwork
  • Certificate of Eligibility from VA for DSU to pay percentage of tuition and fees

Chapter 35

This applies to: Spouses and Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans. You’ll need:

  • VA Form 22-5490 Application for Education Benefits or Form 22-5495 for transfer students

Chapter 1606

This applies to: Army/Air National Guard/Reserve. You’ll need:

  • Most Recent DD-214 or NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility)
  • VA Form 22-1990 Application for Education Benefits or Form 22-1995 for transfer students
  • Any kicker paperwork

Chapter 1607

This applies to: Army/Air National Guard/Reserves who have served overseas since 9/12/01. You’ll need:

  • Most recent DD-214 or NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility)
  • VA Form 22-1990 Application for Education Benefits or Form 22-1995 for transfer students
  • Any kicker paperwork

SD Free Tuition

This applies to: SD resident Veterans who are no longer eligible for the GI Bill. You’ll need:

  • SDDVA Form E-11 signed by Sioux Falls official
