Scholarships

Importance of Scholarships

One of the best measures of a university’s strength is its scholarship program. With the ever-rising cost of higher education, students, now more than ever, select their college destination based on scholarship opportunities. Scholarships are one of Dakota State University’s top recruiting and student retention tools.

Dakota State’s scholarship program is funded by endowment earnings and annual philanthropic gifts. Either way, your scholarship dollars are well-invested in students who have earned your support.

Each year Dakota State awards merit-based Champion Scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional accomplishment and intellectual promise. These awards renew annually for up to four years if the student maintains a high academic standard.

Champion Scholarships are awarded at four different levels based on a student’s high school GPA and standardized test scores. They range from $750 to $5,000 annually, and are funded with both endowed and annual funds.

It is the goal of Dakota State University to bolster the Champion Scholarship program with larger and more scholarship awards to deserving students.

How Scholarships are Funded

Endowments

An endowment is a fund, or pool of funds, that is managed to preserve its value in perpetuity. Most endowments bear the name of the donor of an honoree as a lasting legacy of that person’s passion for the university and their commitment to supporting higher education.

A university’s endowment is its philanthropic lifeblood, and represents its most stable source of revenue for funding scholarships, academic programming, research, or for providing other educational resources.

Annual Giving

Many donors provide an annual gift to the DSU Foundation that is sufficient to provide a student with a meaningful scholarship award. Just like endowed awards, annually-funded scholarships may bear the name of the donor or an honoree.

Athletic Scholarships

The Dakota State University Trojans have a long and rich athletic history, and many donors choose to support the young men and women who have distinguished themselves both in the classroom and on the field of competition. The recruitment of college student-athletes is highly competitive and primarily driven by scholarships.

Athletic scholarships are funded the same as any other scholarship – through endowments and annual gifts. Your gift can be assigned to support a student-athlete in a particular sport, or it can be designated for the greatest scholarship need of the DSU athletic department.

It has been demonstrated that successful collegiate athletic programs dramatically enhance the visibility, image, and brand of their university, and are a critical recruiting tool. By increasing the DSU Athletic Scholarship Endowment, we ensure that Trojan athletic teams will be better-positioned to build on past successes, and to represent the University into the future.
