Timelines and Requirements

There’s no better time to apply.

Our Master of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management program has a set of unique application timelines and admissions requirements, in addition to the overall graduate admissions requirements.

Admission requirements for MSHIIM

New students are admitted to the MSHIIM program in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. To apply, you need to have the following essentials:

A bachelor’s degree

You will need to have a bachelor’s degree from an institution with full regional accreditation for that degree.

A minimum GPA of 2.7

You’ll need a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) to be admitted.

Satisfactory GRE scores

We require that you show satisfactory GRE scores on a test taken within the last five years.

Essential IS knowledge

We ask that you have a fundamental knowledge of information systems when entering the MSHIIM program. You can meet this requirement with one or more of the following:

  • Related undergraduate degree in MIS
  • Specific undergraduate or graduate coursework that covers knowledge of IS
  • Appropriate, verifiable IS or IT experience*

Essential healthcare knowledge

We also ask that you know a bit about healthcare before applying to this program. This means you must have one or more of the following:

  • Related undergraduate degree in health information management or another healthcare field
  • Specific undergraduate or graduate coursework that covers knowledge of healthcare
  • Appropriate, verifiable healthcare experience*

Essential Fundamental Statistics knowledge

  • Related undergraduate degree in statistics or related field
  • Specific undergraduate or graduate coursework that covers required knowledge
  • Appropriate, verifiable experience working with statistics

* For both the IS and healthcare knowledge requirements, if you want to use experience to meet your knowledge requirement(s), you may be asked to demonstrate competency.

If you have not had appropriate coursework or acceptable experience, you can still be admitted to the program if you meet the other minimum requirements. Please note that, if you are admitted in this way, you may be required to complete additional support courses as part of your program of study (such as INFS 601, INFS 612, and more).

Application deadline

Your application is due by:

  • August 15 for admission for the following fall semester.
  • November 15 for admission for the following spring semester.
  • April 15 for admission for the following summer semester.

Please note that the application deadline is subject to change to accommodate available capacity and program needs. This is why we encourage you to submit your application as early as possible.

If you’re applying for an assistantship, please send in your assistantship form along with your application.

Graduation requirements

Our MSHIIM program requires a total of 33 credit hours beyond the baccalaureate. This includes:

  • Successful completion of all courses listed on your MSHIIM Plan of Study within the 5-year time limit
  • Achievement of a GPA of at least 3.0 (a "B" average), with no more than 6 credit hours of a "C" grade and no grade below a "C" in the courses on your Plan of Study
  • Satisfaction of Regental standards for residency, this is satisfied by completing all but a maximum of nine credit hours of your coursework at DSU (distance courses count as "at DSU")
  • Core courses (30 credits): These courses build background and skills that should be common to all masters-level health informatics professionals.
  • Capstone experience (3 credits). This capstone experience can take the form of an applied project or a research  project.
  • A comprehensive exam

For more information, you can view our program courses or contact us.

Program completion

You may complete your MSHIIM on either a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students can usually complete the program in four to five semesters (2+ years), depending on how their basic knowledge requirements are met.

For part-time students, the completion time depends on the number of credit hours taken per semester.

It's time to apply.

We're looking forward to having you join our MSHIIM program.
