ArtificiaI Intelligence Club to host AI Week of February 24
February 24, 2025
Dakota State’s Artificial Intelligence Club is hosting a week of activities to make AI more accessible.
Inspired by other observances on campus, like Research Week and International Education Week, this serves as a way to introduce others to AI, explained Irina Pecherskaia, president of the AI Club.
Aleks Billey joined the club a few months ago, taking on the role of an officer. A cyber operations major, he joined the club to learn more about AI after an internship asked about the AI impact on security.
The club members are excited to introduce people to new concepts and help them better understand the technology through fun activities.
“We want to make it more fun, like games, to attract more attention and audiences,” Pecherskaia said.
Each day of the week will highlight an AI activity. Monday will feature a game for people to guess the AI image prompt, which will help teach participants about how the phrasing of prompts impacts results. On Tuesday, the club has organized a game of AI Bingo, where players will match AI-generated images to AI prompts, to showcase how the technology works. Wednesday, they will host a Q&A panel with AI professors on campus. Dr. Mark Spanier, Dr. Austin O’Brien, Dr. Jason Mixon, and Dr. Jared Soundy will be panelists. On Thursday, there will be an interactive workshop with Chess Bots, Lego Robots, and a DeepRacer.
An Amazon Web Service DeepRacer is a small race car that is used for machine learning reinforcement training jobs.
“It’s reinforcement learning, so you can interact with it and compete with other racing cars online,” Pecherskaia said.
The week will wrap up with a movie night and discussion.
Billey and Pecherskaia hope to pique the interest of people who don’t know a lot about Artificial Intelligence and believe that as advancements continue to be made, everyone will need to understand how AI works and how to work with it.
“The world is changing really fast,” Billey said. “Even compared to six months ago, I would say AI has advanced so quickly. AI allows you to do more with less.”
The AI Club meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. in Beacom 112.
