Tables

Lists are great for an accessibility because they provide built in structured order and navigation for content. Lists are recommended as potential replacements for simple tables, since tables can run into more accessibility issues without proper understanding.

Main considerations

  • Lists should always be checked to ensure that all intended items are within one list instead of multiple lists. Sometimes adding spacing between bullets can inadvertently break one list into multiple.
  • Nested lists, lists within lists, are okay, as long as they are coded properly. Consider if your nested lists should be separate lists or divided with headings instead.
  • Never use indentation alone to provide a visual list. Proper structures that tag your list as such must always be used.

Examples

Most document and website programs have built in styles or tags for creating lists. Lists can be "ordered" or "unordered."

Unordered lists are often use bullets, or other symbols when a specific sequence of information is irrelevant.

Ordered lists are numbered and intended to be in a specific sequence. Screen readers will give context about a list by announcing something like "List of 7 items. Item 1... Item 2...." and so on.
