Biography

Dr. Trent Dawson is an assistant professor teaching computer and cyber science research methods. His faculty appointment is split between the College of Education and Human Performance and the Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. He also holds an administrative director role in which he leads the Governors Cyber Academy (GCA), a statewide effort designed to give pre-college-aged students across South Dakota access to high-quality computing experiences in the form of summer cyber camp, after-school programming, or dual-credit coursework. Dawson leads a talented team of undergraduate student-workers who participate in curriculum development and provides them with academic mentorship through related research projects.

  • Quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Introductory programming

Primary research interest is understanding the learning experiences of nontraditional students in 2-year community college settings taking introductory programming courses. Often, this is their first programming/computing experience. Secondary research population is the nontraditional student enrolled in a teacher apprenticeship program, attending school while employed full-time. Both research areas focus on nontraditional students and the barriers these students face prior to enrolling, the challenges they face in completing a degree, and the extent to which embedded support systems support their continued success.
