Biography
Renae Spohn is the Director of the Health Information Management programs at Dakota State University. She is also the Coordinator of the Master of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management program.
She is a registered health information administrator (RHIA), a certified professional in healthcare informatics (CPHI) and healthcare quality (CPHQ), and a fellow in the American Health Information Management Association and in the National Association for Healthcare Quality.
Spohn currently serves as president-elect of the HIMSS Dakotas Chapter Board of Directors. She also serves on DSU's curriculum committee, and faculty emeritus selection committee.
Additionally, Spohn served as the chair of DSU's CQI Committee. She is a member of the Health Information Management Accreditation Council and has also served as a Peer Reviewer for CAHIIM, the accreditation organization for HIM educational programs. She has served on the SDHIMA Board of Directors and has been President of SDHIMA. She has served on the AHIMA Board of Directors and has served on the AHIMA Fellowship Committee, Triumph Awards Committee, and Nominating Committee. She served as a Chair and Co-Chair of the Long-Term Care Practice Council for several years. In addition, she has served as a Baldrige Evaluator for the Performance Excellence Network (SD, ND, MN).

I believe a successful model teacher (Richmond, Boysen, & Gurung, 2021) working in the Health Information Management (HIM) field exhibits the following attitudes and behaviors: commitment as a lifetime learner; passion for growing the profession and giving back; genuinely interested in helping students to be successful; professional; knowledgeable but curious to learn more; innovative; efficient with student’s time and resources; prepares students for the workplace by assigning student tasks and projects that are practical and important in the workplace; organized; engaged; easy to talk with; provides positive words of wisdom and inspiration to students; is responsive to students; and is an enthusiastic leader utilizing up to date course content.
My favorite courses to teach are Health Information Management, Health Informatics, Healthcare Data Analytics, Health Information Governance, Healthcare Data Integrity, Health Information & Informatics Research, Electronic Health Record Application Current Trends and New Technologies.
My research interests and passions surround the electronic health record documentation system of healthcare including healthcare information governance, data integrity, security, patient privacy, safety, and consumer literacy.
