Dakota State University students walking around campus

Preparation + opportunity = success

That's the DSU equation. We're a four-year university with nationally recognized programs, cutting-edge facilities, and the brightest thinkers. But we're also a tight-knit, inclusive community. Small class sizes mean hands-on training and individualized attention. All this with an affordable, public school price that's among the best values in the region.

Accepting the SD BOR Academic Excellence award are Garret Leiseth and advisor Dan Talley, along with SD BOR CEO Nathan Lukkes, President Tim Rave, and DSU President José-Marie Griffiths.

The purpose of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is to combine business and education together into a positive relationship using innovative leadership and career development programs. FBLA members have unique opportunities to build leadership, teamwork, networking, and project management skills. In addition, the club participates in several campus and community activities, and members are encouraged to attend state and national leadership conferences. Here, members advance their business skills, develop professional resumes, network with business leaders, and compete in a variety of events which are designed to put classroom lessons into practice. Six members competed in Atlanta at the FBLA national conference in June, and five of the six placed in the top 10.

Community Service: DSU Games Club/Nanocon Committee

Accepting the Community Service award are Chad Compton and advisor Mark Spanier, along with SD BOR CEO Nathan Lukkes, President Tim Rave, and DSU President José-Marie Griffiths.

DSU’s Games Club has organized the Nanocon event for over 20 years, and it has had a growing impact and importance to the community. Nanocon serves the community with many free, family-friendly events, and provides a platform for people interested in gaming to meet and share their love for gaming. The group consistently gets positive feedback from those in attendance, but strives to improve it each year, making the event bigger and better. At the 2023 con in November, over 1,000 attendees took part in more than 50 individual events throughout the four-day event. The group also sets fundraising goals to help support state-renowned charities, and this past year was able to donate $1,300 to Sanford Children’s Hospital.

Organizational Leadership: CybHER Club

Accepting the Organizational Leadership award for CybHER are Paige Phinney and Wael Delessa, along with SD BOR CEO Nathan Lukkes, President Tim Rave, and DSU President José-Marie Griffiths.

The DSU CybHER® Club’s goal is to develop female collegiate students into future cybersecurity leaders. They do this through a variety of club events that foster fun and community, professional and personal growth, outreach and service, and networking. Workshops, guest speakers, and conferences give club members opportunities to enhance their technical and personal skills while supporting and encouraging others through volunteering and mentorship. The club hosts workshops and guest speakers to promote professional development and encourage networking. During the summer, the DSU CybHER Institute hosts one of the GenCyber security camp for middle school girls from across the nation, who come together on the DSU campus for a week to learn about cybersecurity.
