Computer science program earns ABET accreditation

October 2, 2025

Dakota State University’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science has earned accreditation from ABET, the premier global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural sciences, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.

This significant recognition, finalized in August, confirms the highest standards of academic quality and rigor within DSU’s computer science program. Accreditation ensures that students graduate with industry-aligned skills and international credibility, validating DSU’s long-standing commitment to preparing graduates for impactful careers in technology.

“We know we have great programs at Dakota State University because of the success of our graduates,” said Dr. Mary Bell, Dean of The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. “This ABET accreditation lets the world know what we already know. DSU provides a world-class education in computer science, in addition to cybersecurity and emerging technology.”

Employers have shared for years that DSU graduates enter the job market entirely industry ready. The program prepares students with highly technical content knowledge and the ability to apply it to complex real world problems. Faculty at Dakota State are recognized leaders in the field and deeply committed to student success. With ABET accreditation as a globally recognized marker of program quality, DSU will not only continue to graduate exceptional students but will also be positioned to attract additional bright students in an increasingly competitive field.

For students, the accreditation signals stronger career opportunities and ensures their degrees are recognized globally. For employers, it guarantees DSU graduates are prepared to contribute with strong technical skills from day one. For the university, it underscores Dakota State’s leadership in computer science, cybersecurity, and emerging technology.

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization. ABET accreditation is awarded for a limited number of years, not to exceed six, with reevaluation required to ensure continuous program quality.
