I. REASON FOR THIS POLICY

This policy contains the criteria by which DSU awards academic honors pursuant to SDBOR 2:10 Grades and Use of Grade Point Averages (GPAs) at the end of fall and spring terms and procedures for communicating those awards to students’ hometown news outlets.

II. Definitions

  1. Full-Time Student. Earning a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours during a semester.
  2. Part-Time Student. Earning less than twelve (12) credit hours during a semester.

III. STATEMENT OF POLICY

  1. Undergraduate Grades. DSU faculty shall assign undergraduate course level grades to all courses and sections with course numbers ranging from 001-499. Faculty shall not use plus or minus grades.

  2. Academic Honors Designation. The President’s Academic Honors Designation is based on an undergraduate’s full or part-time student’s total course registrations for academic credit at the end of fall and spring terms.
    1. Full-Time Undergraduates. To be awarded the President’s Academic Honors Designation, full-time undergraduate students shall meet the following criteria:
      1. Students must have earned a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours in courses numbered 100-699 during the term.
      2. Students must achieve a System Term GPA of at least 3.50.
      3. Students with F, I, U, RI, or RU grades are not eligible regardless of System Term GPA attained.
    2. Part-Time Undergraduates. To be awarded the President’s Academic Honors Designation, part-time undergraduate students shall meet the following criteria:
      1. Students shall have completed at least twelve (12) credit hours prior to the current semester at one or more Regental institutions.
      2. The student shall have earned at least three (3) and up to eleven (11) credit hours of 100-699 level courses during the term.
      3. Students must achieve a System Term GPA of at least 3.50.
      4. Students with F, I, U, RI, or RU grades shall not be eligible regardless of System Term GPA attained.
  3. Transcripts. The President’s Academic Honors Designation shall not appear on an undergraduate’s transcript.

Exclusions
This policy does not apply to graduate students.

Exceptions
The Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs or his/her designee shall make any exceptions to this policy and procedures.

IV PROCEDURES (MAJOR)

  1. Qualified Students List.
    1. The Registrar’s Office shall generate a list of full and part-time undergraduate students meeting the criteria of this policy at the end of fall and spring terms.
    2. The Registrar’s Office shall submit the list of qualified students to the Provost/VP for Academic Affairs.
  2. Student Notifications.
    1. The Provost/VP for Academic Affairs shall notify individual students of their President’s Academic Honor’s Designation.
    2. The Provost/VP for Academic Affairs shall submit the list of students receiving the President’s Academic Honor’s Designation to the Marketing and Communications office.
  3. Hometown Media Outlets Notifications.
    1. The Marketing and Communications Office shall notify each student’s hometown local media outlet of the President’s Academic Honor’s Designations.
    2. The Marketing and Communications Office shall follow FERPA regulations in all public communications.
