Explore your interest in PK–12 teaching and jumpstart your path to becoming an educator. The Gateway to Teacher Education Certificate allows high school students to take dual-credit college courses that introduce the teaching profession while completing classroom observations and foundational coursework in communication, history, American Indian culture and education, and composition. Designed for students considering careers in elementary or special education, the certificate provides a strong introduction to the field.
Courses are available on campus, online, or through In-District High School Dual Credit in approved districts, allowing qualified students to earn credits at a reduced rate while saving time and money.
Advance into the Paraprofessional Apprenticeship Pathway
Students seeking additional hands-on experience can enroll in the Paraprofessional Apprenticeship Pathway, which builds on the certificate and allows students to work part-time as paid paraprofessional apprentices in their local school districts while earning college credit.
Emerging educators
After completing the certificate, students can stack their credits into DSU’s elementary education or special education bachelor’s programs to pursue teacher licensure. In South Dakota, elementary education occupations are projected to grow 5.9% in South Dakota from 2022–2032. With demand for educators rising, graduates will enter a field with strong job opportunities and the chance to make a lasting impact in their communities.
