Dakota State University offers research opportunities to undergraduate students.

The Undergraduate Student Mentored Research Initiative (SRI) program gives students the chance to conduct research with a faculty mentor, giving them hands-on research experience.

Nine undergraduate students were awarded funds to complete their research projects for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Undergraduate Student Mentored Research Initiative Award winners for the year include:

College of Arts & Sciences

  • Elsie Aslesen, a Biology major mentored by Kristel Bakker. Project title: “Neonicotinoid Accumulation in Eggshells of Wild Birds and its Potential Effects on Reproduction.”
  • Travis Rebstock, a Biology major mentored by Andrew Sathoff. Project title: “Assessing South Dakota Fusarium Isolates for Pathogenicity Towards Alfalfa.”
  • Jay Tedone, an Analytical Science major mentored by Andrew Sathoff. Project title: Functional Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) Inoculated with Aphanomyces euteiches.
  • Christine Vogel, a Biology major mentored by Kristel Bakker. Project title: Detecting Bias in Personal Outcome Measures Interviewers.

The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences

  • Ben Bowman, a Cyber Operations major mentored by Robert Richardson. Project title: Bypassing Rolling Code Encryption.
  • Joseph Boyd, a Cyber Operations major mentored by Robert Richardson. Project title: Testing the Reusability of CAN Bus OBD II Replay Attacks Across Vehicles of Similar Make and Model.
  • Jacob Davie, a Cyber Operations major mentored by Andrew Kramer. Project title: Interception of Unsecured Keystrokes.
  • Amir Kemal, a Computer Science major mentored by Andrew Kramer. Project title: Twitter Fake Domain Tracking.
  • Jackson Ruedebusch, a Cyber Operations major mentored by Austin O’Brien. Project title: Using Natural Language Processing to help preserve the Lakota Language.

The College of Education

  • Alison Logue, a Math Education major mentored by Kevin Smith. Project title: Does Technology Allow for Differentiated Instruction in Early Secondary Education Math Classroom.

The students will present the results of their research in March 2023 at the annual Research Symposium.
