TriBeta to offer community outreach
November 2, 2022
Dakota State’s TriBeta Biology Honor Society will be providing community outreach on November 7 and 8 in Madison.
Last year TriBeta held their first outreach activity with St. Thomas, according to Club Leader Elsie Aslesen. They performed shark dissections for the kids, teaching them about sharks, letting them touch the sharks, and answering questions.
“Because last year’s event went so well and our TriBeta program has been growing in membership, we wanted to expand our outreach activities with the Madison Public Library in addition to St. Thomas,” Aslesen said.
This year, TriBeta will be doing a DNA extraction activity in which students will learn how to extract DNA and get to see what DNA looks like.
In addition to the DNA activity at the Madison Public Library, they will teach the kids about dinosaurs and entertain them with some dino trivia as part of the library’s DINovember event.
“It’s important to expose children to these lab activities to give them a taste of how much fun science can be,” Aslesen said. “TriBeta students love science and are so excited for the chance to show the children why science can be so exciting.”
These activities are best suited for children in third grade and up. These events were planned and will be led by club leaders Elsie Aslesen, Travis Rebstock, Christine Vogel, and Abigail Grabowska.
They will be leading lab activities from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 7, at the Madison Public Library and from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, at St. Thomas School.
“Science isn’t just about reading from a textbook, it’s also about engaging in hands-on activities and discovering answers to some of the questions that we’ve always wondered about,” Aslesen added.
