Grants awarded for faculty research

Faculty Research Initiative (FRI) grants for the 2023-24 school year have been selected.

The FRI grant program was established in 2005 and requires faculty interested in funding to tie the project to a professional development program, participate in the annual research symposium, and submit a final report.

“We continue to be encouraged by the variety and excellence of the research faculty are conducting here at DSU,” said Dr. Peter Hoesing, Associate Vice President for Research & Economic Development. “These projects are the beginnings of peer-reviewed publications, innovative installations, and new directions for DSU research.”

The four faculty receiving FRI grants include:

• Assistant Professor in the College of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Tate Carson. Project title: “Resonant Landscapes: Soundscapes of South Dakota,” tied to a Student Research Initiative (SRI) project.
• Associate Professor in the College of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Jeff Elbert. Project title: “Ligand linked Naphthalimides, Structure, Properties, and relation to biological mechanism or action.”
• Associate Professor in the College of Education, Dr. Scott Klungseth. Project title: “Student Perceptions of Flexible Seating in a College Classroom.”
• Assistant Professor in the College of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Pen Guo. Project title: “Computational Physical Science at DSU.” Guo also benefits from “Supporting Talent for Research Trajectories,” or the START program for the open access publishing component of his emerging research profile.

Results from these research projects and others will be featured at the annual research symposium in March 2024.

“We look forward to seeing how some of these projects inspire and motivate student research, too,” Hoesing said.
