Dakota State hires new leader for DSU Foundation
May 1, 2024
The Dakota State University Foundation has a new CEO and Vice President of Institutional Advancement.
Mike McKelvey is an experienced philanthropy officer, having worked in higher education for over 25 years.
“Mike’s experience is exactly what Dakota State needs at this point in our rising trajectory,” said José-Marie Griffiths, President of Dakota State.
“He brings to the table the ability to foster long-term relationships and partnerships, and will use his experience, passion, and vision to achieve our fundraising goals.”
McKelvey is known for his resiliency, work ethic, creativity, passion, and networking skills, which are valuable assets to any organization that he serves. He is especially inspired by philanthropy’s impact on the relationship between students and faculty.
McKelvey has worked with major research universities and premier small public universities, holding senior level positions including Chief Philanthropic Officer, Director of Principal Gifts, and Executive Director of Advancement. He joined Southern Oregon University’s Philanthropic team in 2019, and most recently served there as Director of Principal Gifts. He is also principal and founder at Cascades Community Investments, which serves non-profits or institutions.
With a focus on charitable giving strategies and relationship building, he has a proven track record of success around inspiring philanthropic partners to maximize their resources “with a family first approach” while creating an impact for their community and favorite charities.
McKelvey has learned that “Dakota State is probably the best small, public university in the nation, and I look forward to being part of this institution and its powerful national role,” he said.
He takes the reins following former director, Jon Schemmel, who took the position as athletics director at the University of South Dakota in January. McKelvey will begin his duties with DSU in late May.
