Smith awarded STEM outreach grant

Dr. Kevin Smith knows the importance of mathematics.
“Math is often a gatekeeper for STEM courses and STEM careers,” said Smith, Dakota State University associate professor of education. “If students don't have positive attitudes about math, they don't enroll in STEM courses and don't pursue STEM careers.”
Executive Director of SD Biotech, Joni Ekstrum, said, this is a concern because, “we recognize that the future demands a skilled workforce proficient in STEM fields so they will be able to tackle complex global issues, drive innovation, and sustain economic growth.”
Smith created an outreach program to prepare students for potential STEM careers by helping them understand what mathematics truly is and develop a positive math identity. His program was one of ten awarded a $1,000 STEM grant by South Dakota EPSCoR/South Dakota Biotech at the SD Biotech Summit in October.
These outreach grants are awarded to projects that will enhance the quality of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education within South Dakota K-12 schools and non-profits across the state.
“These grants support the long-term goals of strengthening the state's science education system and connecting outreach activities with South Dakota STEM companies, which will shape the state’s future workforce,” said Ekstrum.
Smith’s project will be used by elementary and middle school students and teachers at area schools beginning in spring 2025. It will include workbook activities demonstrating how math involves looking for patterns, being creative, and staying curious. He will also work with SD Biotech partner companies to create short videos describing how math is used in the workplace. These activities will be incorporated along with Smith’s book, Yucky!, about a young student who learns that math can be fun.
