Dakota State University students walking around campus

Preparation + opportunity = success

That's the DSU equation. We're a four-year university with nationally recognized programs, cutting-edge facilities, and the brightest thinkers. But we're also a tight-knit, inclusive community. Small class sizes mean hands-on training and individualized attention. All this with an affordable, public school price that's among the best values in the region.

Braxton Lacher: Leading, Snapping, and Inspiring at DSU

December 30, 2024

As a DSU student involved in many activities, new graduate Braxton Lacher was often seen around campus. Sometimes he’s been leading a tour for prospective students as a Trojan Ambassador, other times he’s been on the football field practicing his snaps, and he has often been found conducting research and assisting with outreach as a member of the TriBeta Club.

During his time at DSU, Lacher found a family atmosphere filled with support and a sense of community.

Nowhere has he felt that more than on Blankley Field in the new Brian Kern Family Stadium as part of the Beacom PREMIER Complex that opened in August.

“The biggest thing about getting to play on the new field in the complex has been the overall atmosphere,” Lacher said. “You feel really special getting to go out there and play. It really makes us feel like we’re professional athletes.”

So, it comes as no surprise to learn that Lacher’s favorite memory at DSU was beating Dakota Wesleyan in the Ag Bowl this year in the first game on the brand new field.

“We had just hosted the big concert so there were a lot of good vibes and high energy for the game,” he said.

Lacher’s positive experiences have been mainly part of athletics and extracurricular activities, and he also appreciates that support can be found everywhere on campus.

“DSU is a place where people truly care about who you are and want to make you feel special for being you,” he said. “I feel that from everybody, coaches, faculty, and staff on campus.”

Another DSU highlight for Lacher is the advanced technology that is integrated into all majors and classes on campus.

“Technology is the base of everything we do at DSU,” he said. “When you walk into a lab the first thing you have to understand is how to use different equipment and programs to get the results you need and DSU excels at that.”

His advice to other students is to take advantage of the many opportunities on campus and step outside their comfort zones.

“You’ll find some of the best experiences, best memories, and best parts of your life by becoming comfortable in uncomfortable situations,” he explained.

No matter what someone’s niche is, Lacher believes everyone can find their path at DSU.

“There are a lot of different aspects to being a student, between school and academics to sports and clubs, I think DSU does everything well,” he said. “They truly want you to have the best education.”

Lacher, who just graduated, will begin his position as the senior director of Alumni Relations on the institutional advancement team at the Dakota State Foundation.
