Dakota Space: Blasting off into Space Week
October 3, 2018
From Space Day on Aug. 27 to the homecoming theme Dakota Space: Infinite Possibilities, the space theme continues at Dakota State University with a World Space Week event. On Sunday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. DSU is hosting a screening of National Geographic’s unreleased Mars documentary. It will be screened in the Gamified Mars Learning Lab in the Kennedy Center Rm. 123. Seating is limited to 25.
World Space Week was originally organized in 1980 by the World Space Week Association each July 16-24 to celebrate the first moon landing. By 1999, Space Week was celebrated by 15 nations and the United Nations General Assembly declared “World Space Week” to be held every year from October 4-10. On Oct. 4, 1957 the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite. The beach-ball sized satellite launch kicked off the start of the Space Age.
