Students animate for the SD symphony

Five Dakota State University digital arts and design students created graphics and animations with the help of Tim Orme, assistant professor of animation, for the South Dakota Symphony’s show “The Magical Music of Harry Potter.”

Chrissy Anderson, Max Hardyk, Hannah May, Kenny Olson, and Quincton Rush created over 40 animations that were displayed at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, S.D. during seating, intermission, and as people exited the theater.

“My students had a deadline of one animation per week,” Orme said.

Orme provided a template with a color scheme for students to create their own animations.

“They gave us a lot of creative freedom and they trusted what we could do, so we just put together things that fit,” Orme said. “They were really happy.”

This collaboration gave students an opportunity to work with a company while still in school and add animations to their portfolio.

Orme and the students checked projectors out from the library and laptops from IT and set up the equipment at the Pavilion. Each student received a free ticket to attend the event.
