Art students raise money for madison animal shelter

Art students from two classes at Dakota State University will be using their talents to help raise money for the dogs and cats of Madison Animal shelter. The artwork created by students in art classes will be on display and for sale at Sundog Coffee the afternoon of Wednesday, March 20.

Students will be selling 2-d artwork, specifically postcard art and 3-d light weight window art. Students are not required to donate their work but will receive incentives in the classroom if their artwork sells, according to Angela Behrends, assistant professor of art at DSU.

“One hundred percent of the sales from art will stay local,” Behrends said. “It will go into an account that the Lake Vet Clinic has for the Madison Animal Shelter.”  

Additionally, Sundog Coffee will be contributing 10 percent of their proceeds for the day to the account.

This fundraiser gives students the unique opportunity to learn the importance of design and have a larger audience view their work.

“Their design work – the energy they put into it, is really valuable,” Behrends said. Participating in this also shows the students that they are a part of the larger community.

Last fall Behrends and her students held a Halloween fundraiser for the Madison Animal Shelter. Behrends describes these fundraisers as celebrations of everyone’s work. It also allows a larger audience to view and critique their work.

The public is invited to the event, which takes place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, the first day of spring.

“We would like people to treat themselves and have a coffee or a snack and celebrate that winter has to end at some point,” Behrends said. “Come enjoy coffee and fresh art.”
