DSU Homecoming celebrates “Where Dreams Come True”
September 12, 2017
With all the construction that has taken place at Dakota State University over the last year, the Homecoming planning committee wanted to “invite people back to campus to see what we have been up to,” said Mandy Parpart, chairperson of the Trojan Pride Committee. Parpart is director of student activities and new student orientation coordinator.
The Disney song “Be Our Guest” provided the inspiration for the 2017 Homecoming theme, “Where Dreams Come True.” Events planned for September 18-23 include coronation, community contests, several home Trojan athletic events, and the Trojan Days parade on Saturday.
The week’s festivities begin with the Travelin’ Trojan contest for the DSU and Madison-area communities. Monday through Friday the Travelin’ Trojan will be hidden in an on- or off-campus location, and clues will be given daily at 10 a.m. on DSU’s Facebook page and KJAM.
Madison-area business owners are invited to participate in the window/store front decorating contest. The Trojan Pride committee will award prizes in two categories: most theme-related (Disney) and most DSU spirit. Businesses who participate are asked to submit photos of their decorated windows or store fronts to studentactivities@dsu.edu by 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 21. On Friday, the winners will be announced and they will receive their prize package.
On-campus events begin with coronation on Monday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse, followed by a hypnotist show in the Playhouse Theatre, “Mind Games with Paul Ramsay.” General admission is $3. Other on-campus events planned throughout the week include a Disney movie night, and Disney trivia games. More details are available at dsu.edu.
Saturday is a full day of on- and off-campus activities, beginning with the Trojan Days Parade at 10 a.m. Egan Avenue is the parade route, beginning at the railroad tracks near the Greater Madison Area Chamber of Commerce and ending at Eighth Street, just north of the Mundt Library.
Any business or organization interested in participating in the parade may register on the DSU website by Friday, September 15. Entry numbers and other parade information will be emailed out on the evening of September 20.
Following the parade, the new Beacom Institute of Technology will be open for tours from noon to 2 p.m. The Trojan Zone Bookstore will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in their new location in the Trojan Center; bookstore staff will also have DSU items for sale at Trojan Field from 2 p.m. through halftime.
Tailgating will begin at 1 p.m. east of Trojan Field. The DSU volleyball squad will host Valley City State at 1:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse, and the Trojan football team will take on Presentation College at 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.
