DSU to host MadLabs community forum

Dakota State University is hosting a community forum on Wednesday, May 3, on the proposed location of a new campus building for the Madison Cyber Labs (MadLabs). The meeting will be held at 5 p.m. in the Tunheim Classroom Building auditorium.

MadLabs was proposed in 2016 as a cybersecurity and cyber operations research and development center on campus. Potential impact of the new lab center includes continued leadership in cybersecurity education, national defense leadership, workforce development opportunities, and economic development.

At an open campus forum on April 17, Dave Van Nieuwenhuyzen, AIA, principal architect and Sioux Falls market leader for JLG Architects, said their group looked at six potential sites for the new 40,000-sq.-ft. building.

Van Nieuwenhuyzen said their staff considered existing data on the locations, the university’s master plan, the location of the historical district and the flood plain, parking, and utility infrastructure.

The site of Lowry Hall was their recommended location, he said, because it provided a “wow” factor on the corner of 8th Street NW and Egan Avenue, bookended by the Beacom building on the east side of the campus green. Technology and utilities would also be easily accessible. 

President José-Marie Griffiths said that the next step will be to take the proposal to the Board of Regents during their May meeting, with a request to develop a facility design plan. While there is not a commitment of funds for the $18 million building, she said that she wants to keep the process moving forward in the event that DSU is successful with private funding.
