DSU to increase student parking area

Enrollment growth at Dakota State University is creating a need for more student parking options.

To meet this need, work will begin this month to expand the student parking lot at the north end of campus, just north of Courtyard Hall (the former Madison hospital) at Ninth Street and Washington Avenue. Completion is slated for August 17 when students return to campus for the fall semester.

“This will address some of the demand we have for parking on campus,” said Stacy Krusemark, vice president for business and administrative services. In addition, “it will hopefully take some pressure off the street parking near campus.”

There are 121 parking spaces currently in the lot, and the construction will add an additional 83 spots, said Corey Braskamp, facilities management director. The expansion will not affect the sledding hill located behind the Dakota Prairie Playhouse, he added.

Some new asphalt will be used on the existing portion; the new area will be crushed concrete. The project involves the removal of some trees, and the university is investigating landscaping options, including replacing trees, near the expanded lot. This work could take place in the spring of 2019.

The project, bid through the Office of the State Engineer, was granted to Spielman Excavating of Hurley, S.D.
