DSU professor’s & student’s work recognized

A photograph taken by Dakota State University professor Dr. Tom Jones is one of 15 out of 350 selected to be included in the international exhibit “Set in Motion,” at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod.

“The quality of work was incredible,” said Amy Neill, of the Cape Cod center.

The 350 entries used varied shutter speeds to manipulate motion. Jones’s photo, taken on a recent DSU photography studies tour, captured two people walking down a street in Edinburgh, Scotland, just below a sign that reads “Next.”

One of Jones' former students is finding success as well. A photo of Haley Hansen’s, taken at Camden Market outside London, has been selected as a finalist in the 37th annual College and High School Photography Contest, sponsored by Photographer’s Forum. This photo was also taken during the European studies tour. Hansen is from Madison, S.D., and recently transferred to SDSU for medical laboratory science. 

The submissions were adjudicated by college level photography instructors, Ann Cutting from the Art Center College of Design, Peter Glendinning from Michigan State University, and Gene Strickland from Columbus State Community College. All the finalists will be published in a book, Best of High School and College Photography 2017.

“I enjoy the freedom that photography gives me,” Hansen said, “[n]o pressure to capture a specific moment, but having the world and nature as your studio and seeing the beauty in ordinary scenes.”
