Homecoming to celebrate 135 years of teaching teachers

Dakota State University’s 2016 Homecoming Celebration this weekend, Saturday, September 24th, will celebrate the University’s heritage mission of teaching teachers for 135 years. The DSU Homecoming Parade, which will start at 10:00am on Egan Avenue, will include Grace Krumm, DSU Class of 1933. Krumm will celebrate her 102nd birthday on the day of Homecoming! She will be riding in the parade with Annalesha Kalis, Class of 2016, and together they will represent the oldest and youngest education graduates of Dakota State. Krumm lives in Hartford with her granddaughter and family. Kalis is a K-6 special education teacher at Wessington Springs Elementary School.

The parade will feature two DSU education graduates as Parade Marshalls, Deb Platt and Pat Moller. They are impressive representatives of DSU’s College of Education. Platt retired from teaching in 2005, after 23 years with the Mitchell School District where she taught in first, third, and a second through third grade looping classroom. She was named Mitchell Teacher of the Year and South Dakota Teacher of the Year in 1991. Moller teaches high school math, and coaches varsity boys’ and girls’ tennis with the Mitchell School District. He was named the South Dakota Teacher of the Year in 2012. In 2013 he was a Teacher of Excellence award winner and was named a Global Learning Fellow.

Tailgating will begin at Trojan Field after the parade and run up to the kickoff at 4 p.m. for the Trojan’s football game against University of Jamestown.

The 1976 DSU Football Team, which will be celebrating their 40-year reunion, will be introduced during the football game, at halftime.

Saturday morning is the annual Trojan Days 5K run, beginning at 8 a.m.
