Biography

Dr. Pat Engebretson is an Associate Professor in The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science, networking, and cyber security. His research and instruction specialize in the topics of security fundamentals, penetration testing, malware analysis, networking, wireless security, ethical hacking, software security, and programming. In addition to teaching, Engebretson serves as the Faculty Liaison between faculty and university leadership helping to guide, shape, and inform various mission-critical projects in relation to the legislative funding and commitments of the Rising II gift.

 

Before returning to focus on his passion for teaching, Dr. Engebretson served as the Dean of The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. He has also worked for the Department of Defense, earning security clearance for the National Security Agency. His industry experience includes work as the Chief Information Officer and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Senior Manager for East River Electric, where he served as a Senior Executive responsible for all aspects of strategic planning, creation, execution, and compliance of technology for the organization. He has published many articles related to cyber security, and a book titled The Basics of Hacking and Penetration Testing: Ethical Hacking and Penetration Made Easy.

An alumnus of DSU, he holds a Doctor of Science in Information Assurance and a Master of Science in Information Systems. He earned bachelor's degrees in psychology and sociology through North Dakota State University.
