Biography

Dr. José-Marie Griffiths is chancellor of Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota, following 11 years of service as the university’s 23rd president. In this role, she works to expand DSU’s partnerships, visibility, and impact while advancing opportunities in economic development, innovation, research, and public service.

During her presidency, Griffiths helped transform Dakota State into a nationally respected leader in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and technology-focused education and research. Under her leadership, the university achieved record enrollment, expanded its academic and research capabilities, developed significant public- and private-sector partnerships, and strengthened the facilities and infrastructure supporting its growing national security and technology missions.

Griffiths has spent her career in research, teaching, public service, corporate leadership, workforce and economic development, and higher education administration. She has received three presidential appointments, serving on the National Science Board, the U.S. President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee, and the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. She also served as a commissioner and chair of the Workforce Subcommittee for the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence.

Griffiths currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health and is a member of the Special Competitive Studies Project and NVIDIA Task Force on AI and the Future of Work. She also serves as an independent director of Daktronics, Inc.

Throughout her career, Griffiths has led projects for more than 28 U.S. federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Department of Energy, and intelligence and military organizations. She has worked with more than 20 major corporations, including AT&T Bell Laboratories and IBM, conducted work in more than 35 countries, and collaborated with international organizations including NATO and the United Nations.

Griffiths is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received more than 20 significant awards recognizing her contributions to science, technology, teaching, leadership, and the advancement of women in these fields.
