Dakota State University students walking around campus

Preparation + opportunity = success

That's the DSU equation. We're a four-year university with nationally recognized programs, cutting-edge facilities, and the brightest thinkers. But we're also a tight-knit, inclusive community. Small class sizes mean hands-on training and individualized attention. All this with an affordable, public school price that's among the best values in the region.

Stratton to compete at international Cyber Games

June 9, 2022

Dakota State alumnus Logan Stratton is one of the 20 members of the U.S. Cyber Team traveling to Athens, Greece to compete in the first International Cybersecurity Challenge.

Stratton earned two degrees at DSU, an undergraduate degree in Cyber Operations in 2019 and a master’s degree in Computer Science in 2021. He now works as a Research Engineer II at the Dakota State Applied Research Laboratory.

Video games inspired Stratton’s interest in cyber. “I was first interested in the communications and properties related to maintaining a game online,” he said. “This transferred more into the reverse engineering and interactions through low-level systems.”

Prior to choosing DSU, Stratton attended some of the summer camps hosted here and that led him to attend Dakota State. He is originally Luverne, Minn.

“My degrees helped establish all the basics needed and a great path to continue my growth for this competition,” he said.

Stratton learned about the competition from one of DSU’s professors. He participated in the week-long Capture the Flag (CTF) competition and was one of several dozen top players. This was followed by a few months long bootcamp with a “draft.”

When he found out about being a member of the team, he was excited to be able to represent the U.S. in this competition. The team has been working together to prepare for the competition next month.

“I’m looking forward to the trip in general and the multi-region competitive feel that will come with other teams being there,” he said.

The team will compete June 14-17 in Athens, Greece.
