February 25, 2026
Dakota State University’s Dr. Leslie Stover, Director of Academic Affairs Operations, has published a peer-reviewed article examining comprehensive onboarding and professional development models for online adjunct faculty.
The article, “Designing Comprehensive Onboarding and Professional Development for Online Adjunct Faculty,” appears in the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration. In the publication, Stover, outlines a structured, scalable framework that supports adjunct instructors from initial onboarding through ongoing professional growth. The model emphasizes clarity of expectations, consistent communication, mentorship, and data-informed improvement.
As institutions continue expanding their online offerings, adjunct faculty bring valuable industry experience and support in teaching distance courses. Stover’s research addresses how universities can better equip and engage these instructors while maintaining academic quality and alignment with institutional goals.
“Online adjunct faculty are essential partners in delivering high-quality, accessible education,” Stover said. “Intentional onboarding and sustained professional development ensure they are connected, supported, and prepared to create meaningful learning experiences for students.”
Dr. Rebecca Hoey, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, said the publication reflects DSU’s commitment to ensuring all faculty are well prepared to deliver high-quality instruction while also highlighting Stover’s contributions as a scholar.
“This work demonstrates our commitment to preparing and supporting every faculty member for success in the classroom, Hoey said. “It also underscores Dr. Stover’s leadership as both an academic leader and a scholar whose research advances how institutions think about faculty development.”
Stover’s research contributes to national conversations about faculty support and student outcomes in digital education, reinforcing DSU’s leadership in innovative, connected learning environments.
