Former u.s. sen. Larry pressler comes to DSU

October 21, 2015

The DSU College of Art and Sciences and the Lights, Camera, Action! film club are excited to welcome former U.S. Senator for South Dakota, Larry Pressler, for a presentation titled, “History, Hollywood and War:  Larry Pressler and the making of American History.”  The event will be held on Monday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Tunheim Classroom Building (TCB) Auditorium. It is free and the public is invited to attend.

Sen. Pressler will discuss the award-winning film “American Hustle” and how the ABSCAM scandal was portrayed in the film. He famously was the only one NOT to take a bribe in the sting operation that snared seven members of Congress and many other political figures in the late 1970’s. Sen. Pressler, being a decorated Vietnam veteran, will also speak about his views on the accuracy of war films and what effects they have on the general perception of those wars.

“Senator Pressler is looking forward to coming to DSU and discussing aspects of politics and his combat experiences and how film has portrayed these issues,” stated Dr. Ben Jones, Dean of the Arts and Sciences College.  “We hope our film students and the general public take this opportunity to discuss how film becomes, for better or worse, the most pervasive version of history."

Sen. Pressler is a graduate from the University of South Dakota and is a Rhodes Scholar. He also holds various adjunct professor positions at UCLA and NYU.
