I. REASON FOR THIS POLICY
This policy exists to facilitate the process for excused student absences when students participate in field trips associated with scheduled academic classes or academic program requirements.
II. DEFINITIONS
None
III. STATEMENT OF POLICY
- Dakota State University believes that opportunities to participate in off-campus real-world experiences are an important learning tool and can supplement and reinforce classroom learning for students.
- Faculty leading an academic field trip are responsible for notifying other faculty of the upcoming excused absence.
- Students are responsible for any learning and assignments they missed during the excused absence to include negotiating new due dates where appropriate.

IV. PROCEDURES
- Notification to the University: Prior to the academic field trip, the faculty member will compile a list of student participants and provide it, with all associated details about the trip, to the faculty member’s respective academic dean and applicable college administrative office.
- Transportation. If state vehicle(s) will be used, the faculty member will reserve a vehicle through the appropriate administrative office.
- Notification to the Faculty: Faculty of classes taking academic field trips will notify the general faculty of the upcoming field trip by email, to include the date of the trip, time of the trip and list of students participating in the trip. The notification should be shared at least one day in advance of the planned trip.
- Class Attendance: Students are expected to attend all meetings of classes for which they are registered. In the event that a student is expected to participate in an approved academic sponsored field trip that would require absence from his/her registered class(es), the student is responsible for making up any missed assignments and for learning any missed material presented during the absence.
- Professionalism: While on the trip, students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with SDBOR Policy 3:4 Student Code of Conduct.
