Dakota State University students walking around campus

Preparation + opportunity = success

That's the DSU equation. We're a four-year university with nationally recognized programs, cutting-edge facilities, and the brightest thinkers. But we're also a tight-knit, inclusive community. Small class sizes mean hands-on training and individualized attention. All this with an affordable, public school price that's among the best values in the region.

James Maloney selected for NASA fellowship

May 19, 2020

JAMES MALONEYDr. James Maloney was selected as a Faculty Fellow in the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Aerospace Fellowship Program.

Maloney, assistant professor of physics at Dakota State, will participate in a 10-week fellowship beginning in June. He will be working on a project involving nuclear thermal propulsion studies.

“This is my first chance to work with NASA,” Maloney said. “I will be working under the supervision of NASA Marshall Space Center scientist, Dr. Rachel McCauley.”

The fellowship begins on June 1 and will continue through August 10. The program is usually conducted at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic some of the fellowship, such as lectures and simulations, may take place remotely.

As part of a group conducting research, Maloney will have the opportunity to work with and learn from the leading scientists in the field.

“This will be a chance to expand my knowledge and research focus in the fields of nuclear physics and rocketry,” he said. “I am hoping that the work I begin this summer will set the stage for continued research in the field in the coming years by myself and DSU students under my supervision.”
