Rizi awarded amateur radio scholarship

July 19, 2023

Tony Rizi is passionate about exploring the world of amateur radio and digital communications and inspiring and shaping the future of wireless technology.

The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) recognized this drive, and granted Rizi a scholarship for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Amateur Radio Digital Communications Scholarship includes a financial grant of $15,000 which will catalyze his continued support of local outreach programs. This will empower him to further expand opportunities for students and amateurs, and nurture the next generation of radio enthusiasts.

Rizi participates in a number of outreach events to showcase the versatility and reach of amateur radio.  Initiatives with the International Space Station, Islands on the Air, and Parks on the Air promote outdoor exploration and appreciation for natural environments and also demonstrate the power of wireless communication in connecting enthusiasts across different geographical locations.

“By organizing opportunities for students to communicate with the International Space Station, I hope to spark interest in both amateur radio and space exploration,” he said. “Field Day Events encourage hands-on participation, enabling individuals to connect with fellow amateurs and engage in friendly competitions.”

Rizi is a native of North Augusta, South Carolina, and a Ph.D. candidate in Dakota State University's Cyber Operations program. He expects to graduate spring 2024.

“I appreciate fostering a sense of curiosity and excitement among old and young enthusiasts,” he said.
