How to Apply for an International Graduate Degree

We aim to make the graduate application process as simple as possible but if, at any point, you find the process confusing or have questions, we’re more than happy to help walk you through it.

Application Process

Complete the admission steps to apply as an international graduate student (be sure to identify any additional requirements that may be necessary for the program you are seeking):

  1. Complete the online graduate application.
    • Pay your $36 application fee.
  2. Submit necessary documentation. Refer to the Timelines and Requirements page of your desired program for the required documents such as official transcripts and recommendations.
  3. Verify that you are financially self-sustaining. Complete and upload the Certificate of Financial Responsibility form (PDF) and bank statements in your application portal.
  4. Once you have demonstrated your financial responsibility, we’ll send you a Form I-20. You’ll need this form to apply for an F-1 Student Visa

Program Exceptions

The following programs do not meet F-1 student visa regulations because they are offered exclusively online with DSU.

Application Eligibility Restrictions for Online Students

The United States Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) administers several sanctions programs. Dakota State University cannot accept applications, enroll students, or provide educational services to individuals who are citizens of, or who reside in, countries subject to sanctions administered by OFAC. This restriction will remain in effect until such sanctions are lifted or specific authorization is obtained. These restrictions do not apply to on-campus students.

For the current list of sanctioned countries, please refer to the U.S. Department of the Treasury OFAC Sanctions Programs and Country Information. Visit the Global Compliance for Online Studies page for additional information on distance education.
