Show your students how to explore, imagine, and flourish in a vast array of biological sciences. Educate your students on genetics and plant life. Explore animal classifications. Demonstrate safe laboratory practices. Inspire their inner scientist.
Combine biology and pedagogy
DSU’s biology education program prepares you to become an expert in biology and pedagogy (teaching methods). Learn biological principles. Understand the fundamentals of education. Use the scientific method to orchestrate experiments. Conduct an undergraduate research project. Work in remarkable laboratories.
To give you the most out of your program, we embed a K-12 Technology endorsement in every education degree, allowing our students to teach computer classes post-graduation. You’ll also complete observation courses and a yearlong student teaching residency; giving you experience in classroom management, Common Core State Standards, teaching methods, and more.
Paying for college
As part of our commitment to providing affordable options for all DSU students, we offer many scholarships and grants. Some financial aid opportunities are specifically available for the education degrees/majors in high-need teaching areas.
TEACH Grant eligible
Dakota State University's B.S. in Biology Education is eligible for the federal TEACH Grant (up to $4,000 a year) for students who meet the academic requirements and are completing course work to begin a career in teaching. Students will need to complete a four-year teaching appointment with a school or educational service agency that serves low-income students. Learn more about the TEACH Grant.
Critical Teaching Needs Scholarship
The South Dakota Critical Teaching Needs Scholarship is available for students preparing to work in a critical need teaching area. Learn more about the scholarship.
Share your passion, inspire your classroom
Be the teacher you’ve always wanted to be, in a field you love and enjoy. Share that passion with young students and motivate them to achieve their fullest potential.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the BS in Biology with a Biology Education Specialization, students will:
- Apply fundamental principles of biology across scientific disciplines.
- Communicate science in multiple forms (written, oral, electronic) to diverse audiences.
- Apply basic scientific methodology (observation, experimentation, hypothesis testing) to answer biological questions in a rigorous and ethical manner.
- Incorporate current technology into conceptual frameworks for biology.
- Maintain productive learning environments for all students.
- Design developmentally appropriate practices in relation to biology content and pedagogy.
