Military Programs
Active duty military (chapter 30)
Applicable for active duty personnel in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, or Navy. If you're currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, your Education Office is an excellent resource to learn more about the benefits due to you. For DSU, you’ll need to:
- Submit your most recent DD-214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty
- Complete VA Form 22-1990 Application for Education Benefits or Form 22-1995 for transfer students
VA vocational rehabilitation (chapter 31)
Applicable for veterans and active duty service members who have applied to, and have been determined eligible through, the Veterans Benefits Administration. For DSU, you’ll need to:
- Meet with a counselor from the regional VA Vocational Rehabilitation office (Sioux Falls, Rapid City, or your surrounding area)
Post 9/11 veterans (chapter 33)
Applicable for veterans and service members who have served on active duty for 90 days or more since September 10, 2001. For DSU, you’ll need to:
- Complete VA Form 22-1990 Application for Education Benefits or Form 22-1995 for transfer students
- Submit your most recent DD-214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty; any kicker paperwork; and, Certificate of Eligibility from VA for DSU to pay a percentage of tuition and fees
Spouses and children of deceased or disabled veterans (chapter 35)
Depending on your spouse's benefits and eligibility or your circumstances, military spouses and dependents may be entitled to transferable benefits. For DSU, you’ll need to:
Army/air national guard/reserve (chapter 1606)
Applicable for members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Reserves, as well as the National Guard. For DSU, you’ll need to:
South Dakota resident veterans
Applicable for honorably discharged South Dakota residents who had service after Aug. 1, 1990, and received a campaign, expeditionary, or service medal for combat operations. For DSU, you’ll need to:
- Submit a SDDVA Form E-11 (PDF) signed by a Sioux Falls official
Tuition assistance
- Prospective current military students planning on using Tuition Assistance (TA) benefits must first receive approval from their Education Service Officer (ESO), military counselor, or service branch prior to enrollment.
- Follow the application process identified by the service member's military branch.
- Once the application is approved, send approval documentation to DSU’s Veteran Affairs Office at veteran.assistant@dsu.edu
- Apply to DSU.
- After completing the admissions and registration process, submit the Veteran Benefit form.
