With the cryptography specialization, you will gain expertise in encryption, secure communications, and information security. It will prepare you for creating and utilizing powerful encryption to keep computer systems safe and help protect digital information while developing your problem-solving and programming skills. You will learn about modern methods of encryption, cryptographic communications, and information security algorithms and protocols. Expand your knowledge of mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering and encode your future.

Further broaden your knowledge with a technology-focused minor in computer science or cyber operations. You can strengthen your foundation in technology through learning the inner workings of data structures and programming languages. Soon you will become an expert in processed data, operating systems, and malware analysis.

Instill confidence in young mathematicians with a degree in mathematics for intermediate education. You will be prepared to teach math basics to K-8 students following your training in courses focused on math concepts like arithmetic, geometry, and problem-solving. Alongside mathematical reasoning, gain knowledge about available technology for the classroom and classroom management techniques.

You will learn how to explain effective teaching strategies and secure a strong foundation in teaching methods. As a mathematics intermediate education student, you will complete a yearlong residency/student teaching capstone experience. You’ll have the opportunity to get real life classroom experience, while still learning from professional mentors.

TEACH Grant eligible

Dakota State University's Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with an Intermediate Education Specialization is eligible for the federal TEACH Grant (up to $4,000 a year) for students who meet the academic requirements and are completing course work to begin a career in teaching. Students will need to complete a four-year teaching appointment with a school or educational service agency that serves low-income students. Learn more about the TEACH Grant. 

Critical Teaching Needs Scholarship

The South Dakota Critical Teaching Needs Scholarship is available for students preparing to work in a critical need teaching area. Learn more about the scholarship.

Turn your passion for math into a teaching career with a specialization in secondary education. Inspire and prepare future mathematicians in subjects from algebra to calculus and statistics. You will build a strong foundation in advanced math topics by studying the sequences, series, polar coordinates, and improper integrals of calculus II, and learning about different geometries like transformational geometry, three-dimensional geometry, and non-Euclidean geometries. Core courses in this specialization will also prepare you in educational methods like educational psychology and secondary/middle content area to equip you to lead in middle and high school classroom settings.
