Fellowship opportunities

An * indicates that these fellowships are open to non-U.S. citizens.

The fellowship supports fellows with the writing phase of their dissertation and alleviates the need for significant employment. The fellowship comprises three key components:

  1. Fellows receive $27,500 for one academic year, distributed in two installments.
  2. Fellows participate in two professional development retreats facilitated by NAEd members and other distinguished scholars. These retreats offer general and specialized discussions to enhance the fellows’ research capabilities and academic growth.
  3. Fellows choose an NAEd member or another esteemed scholar as a mentor, providing guidance and support throughout the academic year.

To receive the fellowship, applicants must:

  1. Be candidates for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States. US citizenship is not required.
  2. Complete all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1, 2026.
  3. Provide a clear and specific plan for completing the dissertation within one or two years.
  4. Propose an education research project.
  5. Submit an individual application, as we will not accept group applications.

National Academy of Education (NAed) Spencer Dissertation Fellowship*

GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, including STEM education. NSF GRFP was established to recruit and support individuals who demonstrate the potential to make significant contributions in STEM, including STEM education.

National Science Foundation Fellowship

The Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program offers in-resident opportunities for independent research and study related to Smithsonian collections, facilities, and/or research interests of the Institution and its staff. Fellowships are offered to graduate students, predoctoral students, and postdoctoral and senior investigators to conduct independent research and to utilize the resources of the Institution with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff serving as advisors and hosts. These fellowships are offered through the Smithsonian’s Office of Academic Appointments and Internships, and are administered under the charter of the Institution, 20 U.S. Code section 41 et seq.

Applicants who wish to conduct research at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) should note SAO application requirements and deadlines may be different.

Smithsonian Institute Fellowship Program (SIFP)

ACLS invites applications for Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Innovation Fellowships, which provide a year of support for doctoral students preparing to embark on innovative dissertation research projects in the humanities and interpretive social sciences. This program is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation.

Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Innovation Fellowships

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is a non-partisan organization that is proud to honor the contributions of continuing generations of immigrants and refugees to the United States. Find out the requirements you need to meet to become a Fellow in 2026.

General requirements:

  • You are an immigrant or the child of immigrants.
  • Your birth parents must have both been born outside of the US as non-US citizens, and both parents must not have been eligible for US citizenship at the time of their births.
  • Your parents’ current immigration status or location is not relevant. Some Fellows’ parents never immigrated, some have returned to their country of origin, others have naturalized or received their green cards in the US, and others are living in the United States but have not naturalized.

PD Soros Fellowship for New Americans*

The DoD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program is a competitive fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. dual citizens who intend to pursue a Doctoral degree aligned to the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) in research and development at a U.S. institution of their choice.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship

This year, we are particularly keen to see applications from the following academic disciplines: Physical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics.

To apply, you must:

  • Be a woman from an eligible low- or middle-income country.
  • Be pursuing a PhD or post-doctoral research in a STEM field.
  • Be enrolled, admitted, or have applied to a university or research institute abroad.
  • Have an excellent academic record.
  • Be committed to returning to your home country to contribute to its socio-economic development.
  • Demonstrate leadership, community engagement, and a track record of encouraging women and girls in STEM.

Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship*

AAUW’s proud tradition of funding women pursuing higher education is anchored in its American Fellowship – AAUW’s flagship initiative. The American Dissertation Fellowship, in particular, offsets scholars’ expenses during their final year of dissertation writing and deepens AAUW’s impact by accelerating diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia. The American Dissertation Fellowship is open to women in all fields of study, though those engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math fields, or those researching gender issues, are especially encouraged to apply. Established in 1888, AAUW American Fellowships are the oldest non-institutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States.

Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities (INRO)

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a unique opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students to advance their education and jumpstart their careers. SMART provides merit-based scholarships to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students pursuing STEM degrees. SMART scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, summer internships, and, after graduation, civilian employment with the Department of Defense. Applications are open annually from August 1 to the first Friday in December. Check your eligibility now to see if you qualify and take the first step toward a successful future in STEM.

SMART Scholarship Program/Fellowship

The Hagan Scholarship provides $2,000 to help purchase essential items for college, up to $7,500 each semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters, workshops to learn important life skills not typically covered in the college curriculum, HSF Schwab Brokerage Account to manage to learn how to invest, and up to $8,000 to study and travel abroad.
Hagan Scholars who graduate while in the Hagan Scholarship Program can apply for a Hagan Graduate Scholarship, good for up to four additional consecutive semesters to attend graduate school or the first two years of a professional program, receiving up to $7,500 each semester.
