English for New Media (BS)

Content anytime, anywhere

Do you love media, reading, writing? We do too.

Our English for New Media program gives a traditional English degree a jolt of new technology. As a student, you'll take on new media and increase your skills in publishing, editing, video production, and more.

Study linguistics. Analyze and critically respond to various texts. Express yourself clearly and effectively in creative or expository writing. Discuss literature and media pieces with classmates and faculty. Use web publishing platforms. Explore a variety of genres, cultures, and media.  Provide content anytime, anywhere.

New media, new opportunities

DSU publishes two major publications: the Trojan Times and New Tricks – a literary magazine. Both publications allow students to gain valuable editorial and publishing experience, while also submitting stories, poems, or photographs.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the BS degree in English for New Media, students will be able to:

  • Analyze and critically respond to a variety of texts, including both traditional, literary print texts and new media texts, including interactive texts, film, still images, etc.
  • Express themselves clearly and effectively in writing, whether creative or expository
  • Express themselves clearly and effectively in verbal discussions and presentations
  • Integrate elements of design to best serve rhetorical purpose
  • Create a variety of texts (traditional expository prose, hypertext, creative writing, etc.) that integrate multiple modalities into a verity of media (traditional documents, web-based texts and content, video, audio, etc.)
  • Identify or formulate an appropriate rhetorical framework to communicate effectively for the purpose and audience
  • Demonstrate critical thinking that is clear, insightful, in-depth, and relevant to the topic. To this end, the student can see, appreciate, and pursue conceptual connections among texts from across time, genres, cultures, and media
