Your Location Matters

Licensure Requirements & Out-of-State Educational Activities 

Dakota State University offers a broad range of academic degree programs available for on-campus and distance education students.

Your location matters if you are participating or plan to participate in any of the following scenarios outside of the state of South Dakota or intend to relocate outside of South Dakota.

 

Dakota State University programs that lead to professional licensure or certification are intended to prepare a student for potential licensure or certification in South Dakota.

Licensure and Disclosure

DSU is not able to provide all programs online or out-of-state placement in all states and countries due to regulations and laws.

If a student resides in a state outside of South Dakota or plans to relocate to another state, they should take the following steps prior to enrolling in a program that leads to licensure or certification:

  • Use the Program Availability Map to view DSU programs and determine whether the program meets the licensure or certification requirements in the state you are in or looking to be employed. The state agency or licensing board infromation is also listed. If you have questions or a state looks unavailable, reach out to the college of you interest:
  • Ensure you can sit for licensure or certification upon completion of the academic program or complete the exam or student teaching.

State laws require institutions to be authorized to offer online degree programs in states other than their own. Prior to enrolling in an online course or program students must:

When looking at taking an on-campus or online course with an experiential learning activity such as, but not limited to, clinical, internships, externships, student teaching supervised field experience, co-curricular courses, fellowships, seminars, etc., you will complete several steps with your academic advisor. An experiential activity cannot be done in all states or in other countries. You should:

  • Plan ahead and consult your academic advisor to make sure you can do activity outside SD if requested.
  • Use the Program Availability Map to view if your program has an experiential activity and which states can the activity be conducted in.
  • Check to see if you need to complete an application before doing the activity.

Every student must report a current address at the time of initial enrollment in DSU. Prospective and current students should keep in mind that licensing and authorization requirements vary by state. Your admission into a program is granted at the time of initial acceptance into the DSU program. Students must:

  • Prior to course registration, you must report where you will be physically located for each semester.
  • In situations where your educational plan changes after registration, you shall inform DSU of any change in physical location. Update your address through the SD Board of Regents Student Portal. Scroll down to under My Academic Information and click on Student Personal Information.
  • A change in physical location may impact the following: 
    • Receipt of financial aid or benefits  
    • Ability to complete the degree program or course 
    • Ability to sit for professional licensure or certification  
    • Possibility the program may not meet the eligibility requirements of applicable state 

Changing your major is a significant decision, so it is important to thoroughly consider your options. 
Prior to considering changing your major, talk with your academic advisor or faculty.

  • Use the Program Availability Map to ensure the DSU programs meets licensure, certification, or experiential activity requirements in the state you are physically located in.
  • Go to the Program Update Request site to submit start the process.

Student Responsibility

It is your responsibility to contact the DSU College personnel of your program if there is a change in physical location.  By reaching out the personnel can assist in ensuring that the educational program and activity you are considering pursuing outside of South Dakota.
