Gateway Certificates
Dakota State University’s Gateway Certificates offer high school students a head start on their college journey through dual credit courses. By completing 3-4 courses, students can get a jump start on both major-specific coursework and general education requirements.
Gateway certificates are available:
- On DSU’s campus
- Online
- In approved school districts
These courses are offered at the reduced dual-credit rate, saving time and money while exploring their academic interests.
Although designed for students in the High School Dual Credit (HSDC) program, Gateway Certificates are open to all South Dakota Board of Regents students. You do not have to complete them exclusively through HSDC.
Available Programs
The certificate provides foundational knowledge in business and can be stacked into the Business Administration (BBA) program. It may also count toward stackable general education electives in other majors.
This certificate does not lead to licensure or certification.
Ideal for students interested in digital tech careers, this certificate prepares you for further study in programs such as:

Designed for students interested in healthcare and health-related fields, this certificate is stackable with:
Credits may also be used as electives in other programs.
Explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and math. This certificate stacks into programs like:
- Other tech-related degrees
This certificate offers an introduction to the field of education and is stackable with DSU’s teaching degree programs.
This certificate does not lead to teacher licensure or certification.
Students can pursue licensure by enrolling in Dakota State University’s Elementary or Special Education bachelor's programs after completing the certificate.
How to Apply
Dual-credit course application windows:
- November 1 – Spring Application Opens
- March 1 – Summer Application Opens
- April 1 – Fall Application Opens
Students can register for the Gateway Certificates through the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) Dual Enrollment Application.
Requirements
To participate in the dual credit program through the South Dakota Board of Regents, students must meet certain eligibility requirements. These include academic criteria and credit hour waiver policies.
